Special Appliances with Refrigerant Section:
As mentioned, resources are limited on disposal of appliances with freon. If you have an old non-working refrigerator out back there are options.

Check with other cities or counties. County Resources besides SG County.
Some appliance dealers will take for parts. Also consider removing the compressors and stockpiling. Some appliance service shops will take them.
Check with refrigerator and air conditioner service shops. Many will reclaim the refrigerant but THEY ALL CHARGE A FEE of some sort (some higher than the transfer stations or landfills) but may negotiate depending on what you have (also some do house-calls).
Many metal recyclers will indeed pick up but be sure to ask questions as to what they will do with the freon.
